2011 UNW Silver Cup

Silver Cup Final Winner - Joey Caines with race sponsor Dave Hawley

Silver Cup Connie winner - Greg Roth

Saturday June 4th

Silver Cup Results: Joey Caines wins his very first race capturing the coveted Silver Cup.
Doug Kirk wins the consolation driving his son's 1972 Notre Dame

If the weather was any indication of a wonderful day, Joey Caines, and the special prize of a honest to God Crew Shirt from the U-37 big Boat camp (presented by race Sponsor Dave Hawley) was a special incentive to the winner of the race, along with the Oldest trophy in UNW -the coveted Silver Cup, added that little extra that for Joey, that will make this years Silver Cup a memorable day indeed.

The sunny waves of Lake Tye saw 20 boats make the field in what turned out to be a day of survival, in that the wind kept the wave action to the point of creating some pretty big holes out in that right turn (I think some thought they were negotiating the bar at Westport) Shawn Warren's Eliminator, found the right turn to be the 'graveyard of ships' in that his boat lost radio function on two different occasions, and went into the beach both times

The consolation found Doug Kirk with a dilemma. His Cellular One made the Final outright, but he had picked his son's boat (Which he was also driving) the 1972 Notre Dame, as his points boat, which made the consolation. In a daring move, he raced the Notre Dame to a 1st place finish, and with the format of the day, placed the Notre Dame in the final. Not being able to drive two boats at once, he withdrew the Cellular One and ran the final driving the Notre Dame. This had the affect of placing the number two finisher of the consolation, Greg Roth and his Miss Weisfields into the final as the trailer boat, allowed to start if all were not up and running at the 30 second mark

At the 30 second mark Greg pulled off the Miss Weisfields, as everyone jockeyed for position. In what could only be considered perfect timing!! In the score up, Joey Caines found himself in lane one with Charlie's Girl at full throttle hitting the line perfectly RIGHT ON the buzzer. It doesn't get any better than that!! It pretty much was all over ,but for the crying, as with the only change being the Right turn taking out one competitor after another, in what was a race for survival against the wind whipped waves, until it was only Joey and John Hruby's Circus Circus still running

Thanks to Dave Hawley for sponsoring and calling a wonderful race, and offering up that special crew shirt (Pretty Sweet). Thanks to all the participants who showed up and made the day as fun as it turned out to be!! Thanks to the City of Monroe for allowing us to race and the facility workers at Tye Lake Park, and a VERY special Thanks to those involved in Joey's "Dunking Party" after Joey refused to go in on his own!!

Seems you guys are getting a little extra practice this year with all the upcoming talent in UNW.

Well, I hope to see you next Saturday, June 11th, at the Molson Thunderfest. Same place - Monroe's Lake Tye Park. Till then, Happy Racing!!
